Leading innovations in schools-Spring 2021

Dr. Karen Maldonado is the first-ever Director of Education Reform for the Financial Oversight and Management Board of Puerto Rico (FOMB). The Board is tasked with working with the people and government of Puerto Rico to create the necessary economic growth and to restore opportunity to the people of Puerto Rico. Her role is to ensure the Department of Education for Puerto Rico follows the government’s fiscal plan for education reform, to support the Department as they strategize on how to uplift communities and create quality schools that serves students and position them to be globally competitive post high school graduation and in labor markets. Before moving to Puerto Rico in 2019, Karen was a leader for the New York City Department of Education. Her roles ranged from classroom teacher, to founding principal of the first 6-12 transitional bilingual school in New York City, to Administrative Superintendent.

Dr. Maldonado holds a Professional Coaching Certificate with the International Coaching Federation (ICF) and she is founder of Karma Executive Coaching, LLC. She earned a Doctorate in Education Leadership (E.d.L.D.) from Harvard University, and M.S. in Supervision in Education from Fordham University and her B.A. in Sociology from State University of New York—Binghamton University.
